Federation Fellow, Prof Munro is a young physicist with a remarkable record, including numerous awards and over 200 publications in the cutting-edge field of photonics. She is a world leader in optical fibre research. Her new class of soft glass optical fibres has already led to outcomes such as improved industrial processes for micro-mchining plasma television displays, record high-power fibre lasers for defence, and devices for optical data processing that are orders of magnitude more compact and efficient than conventional technologies. Her work will also underpin future disruptive technologies for monitoring our drinking water, screening for viruses and many defence applications.
